A big year looms for Treylon Burks
The Tennessee Titans drafted Treylon Burks just after trading AJ Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2022 NFL Draft, and he has disappointed to this point in his career, but that does not mean they are not giving up hope for him, as wide receiver coach Tyke Tolbert explained what he is doing with Burks this offseason to try to help him put it all together in 2024.
“Really impressed with Treylon up to this point,” Tyke Tolbert said, via John Glennon of the Nashville Post. “Because you never know where he could line up. He could be outside, could be inside. He’s really taken hold of that. He studies at night. He asks me questions. He’s really good. I’m really surprised — or pleased — not necessarily surprised, pleased with his progress.”
It is clear that Tolbert and the Titans have a lot on Burks’ plate this offseason. Tolbert said he believes that Burks is improving throughout the offseason.
“He’s getting better every day. Every day we’ve been out here, he’s done something and gotten better every single day,” Tolbert said, via Glennon. “I like his explosion, he’s got really good ball skills. And again, he’s learning all three positions. So I’m looking forward to continuing to work with him and see how he can help us in the Fall.”
It seems like the Titans want Burks to be flexible, having him lineup all over the field and learning three positions, as Tolbert said. When looking at the roster, that makes a ton of sense.
What will Treylon Burks’ role be with the Titans in 2024?
When looking at the wide receiver depth chart, Burks seemingly sits fourth in the pecking order. DeAndre Hopkins is still on the team going into 2024, while the front office made a splash by bringing in Calvin Ridley on a big deal in free agency, and Tyler Boyd was recently added as well. This is an effort to give quarterback Will Levis every chance to succeed.
Calvin Ridley will obviously be the first option in the passing game, while DeAndre Hopkins should still get a good amount of targets as well. Tyler Boyd is predominantly a slot receiver going back to his time with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Needless to say, Burks will have to earn his playing time this year. If he shows any of the promise that made the Titans draft him in 2022, then he should have a decent role in the offense. Health will be a big factor as well. Burks has played in 11 games in each of his first two seasons.
This is a big year coming up for Burks, as after this season, the Titans will have to decide on his fifth year option. It would take a big leap in production to justify picking that up.
