Sean Payton doesn’t seem to have much love for Russell Wilson given his brief but vicious response after being asked about the quarterback’s offseason release.
The Denver Broncos are paying a lot of money just so Wilson does not play for them. He has since signed a deal that’s seen him become the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting QB following a disappointing two-year spell.
While the Broncos have taken on a record amount in dead money to release Wilson, Payton doesn’t seem to be bothered by it.
Check out his response to a reporter’s question on the financial consequences right below:
Cold…
The Broncos acquired Wilson in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. He came in with a glut of expectations considering his status as a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner. But things hardly went as planned, with the team missing out on the playoffs both seasons and going 11-19 with him under center.
Russ’s position came under threat after Sean Payton took over as head coach last year. He would find himself benched for the remaining two games of the season before he was released by the team.
Sean Payton Is Ready To Move On With Jarrett Stidham
With Wilson now gone, Sean Payton is expected to start Jarrett Stidham in 2024, unless the Broncos bring in another QB before the end of the season. The upcoming NFL Draft will also hand them another opportunity to land a franchise signal-caller, though they’re picking at No. 12 in the first round.
Russell, on the other hand, is keen on resurrecting his career in Pittsburgh. He has since been joined there by younger QB Justin Fields, who arrived via trade from Chicago.
Head coach Mike Tomlin has confirmed that the veteran will start, but the competition will be interesting.
